Spokane is a city defined by its active community, stunning natural surroundings, and love for movement. Yet, when winter hits, our region faces a critical shortage: the lack of a year-round, state-of-the-art indoor aquatics facility.
At Aquatics for All Spokane, we are uniting residents, athletes, families, and civic leaders to build a premier indoor aquatic center that serves every corner of the Inland Northwest, 365 days a year.
The Logistical Need in Spokane County
Spokane County serves over 540,000 residents, yet public year-round swimming access is stretched to a breaking point. Currently, there are only two public indoor aquatics facilities operating year-round in the entire county:
Eastern Washington University (EWU) Aquatic Center (Cheney)
Airway Heights Aquatic Center (Airway Heights)
Outside of these two locations, the only other year-round options are private or membership-based organizations such as local YMCAs and various gyms. This severe deficit leaves entire neighborhoods, competitive teams, and low-income families without reliable, public, year-round access to water safety programs, fitness, and aquatic recreation. While these facilities do operate year-round, they cannot accommodate the need for aquatic space for sporting needs.
Why Spokane Needs a New Indoor Facility
Severe Capacity Bottlenecks: With only two public year-round facilities serving the entire region, lap lanes, swim lessons, and open-swim times are constantly at maximum capacity.
Geographic Gaps: Residents in central, north, and east Spokane County must drive long distances—often in winter road conditions—just to access public pool hours.
Essential Water Safety: Drowning remains a leading cause of accidental injury and death in youth. A modern facility ensures every child in Spokane has accessible, year-round water safety education without long waiting lists or high membership paywalls.
Economic & Sports Development: Spokane loses major regional swim meets and tourism revenue to neighboring cities simply because we lack the lane capacity and spectator infrastructure to host large-scale events.
Inclusive Health & Wellness: From zero-depth entries for adaptive recreation to warm-water therapy for seniors, an expanded public footprint ensures health benefits are available to all ages and physical abilities year-round.
